Are Vegetarian Vitamins Really Necessary?

A healthy and varied (lacto-ovo) vegetarian diet should normally require no supplements or vitamins, since the food contains all the nutrition you need.

However, there are times when even vegetarians might need some extra support;

  • during stressful times when perhaps we are not eating as well or as healthy as we should,
  • during cold and flu season,
  • or if we have been told by our health practitioner that we need to supplement our diet.

If you are strictly vegan, you will also probably need to supplement with vitamin B12.

But All Vegetarian Vitamins Are Not Great...

Did you know that vitamins, minerals and other supplements are not always vegetarian?

Capsules may have been made from gelatin, and the ingredients may have been mixed with animal byproducts etc.

What you need to look out for are;

  • certified vegetarian or vegan vitamins and supplements,
  • good quality brands that mean that the product is made of high quality and fresh ingredients.
