No, there is absolutely no meat in this lacto-ovo vegetarian spaghetti and «meat» balls recipe!

If you or your kids love spaghetti and meatballs, there is no reason not to continue to enjoy this dish as a vegetarian!

The meatballs are made of rice, but tastes really great, and together with the tomato sauce and the spaghetti it's a real hit! This is an easy vegetarian comfort food dish that is super tasty and filling.

This meatless spaghetti and meatballs recipe is also a great way to be able to use up any leftover cooked rice you might have hanging around in the fridge.

I especially like basmati rice, but usually cook too much rice...

So, the next day I can whip up these rice balls while I cook spaghetti and heat up some tomato sauce. Delicious! And a rather quick job as well.

What is also great is that this dish also freezes very well. I recommend to plop some containers with leftover rice balls and tomato sauce in the freezer for use on another day.

Here's What You Need

  • 1 pack spaghetti (or as much as you need) 
  •  2 cups cooked white rice, basmati
  •  ½ cup quick cooking oats 
  •  1 medium onion, chopped finely 
  •  ¼ cup dry bread crumbs 
  •  ¼ cup milk 1 tsp dried basil 
  •  ½ tsp dried oregano 
  •  ¼ tsp ground chili pepper 
  • 1 tsp Salt (or to taste) 
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper (or to taste) 
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  •  ½ cup bread crumbs for coating 
  •  2 Tbsp. olive oil 
  •  2 cups pasta sauce, ready made or make your own.
  •  Optional: Grated vegetarian cheese.   

Here's What You Do

  1. Mix together the rice, oats, onion, breadcrumbs, milk, spices and egg. 
  2. With the help of a tablespoon, shape 12 balls and roll each one to coat in the breadcrumbs. 
  3. Heat the oil in a skillet on medium heat. 
  4. Fry the balls while turning them frequently for about 10-15 min. until they turn a golden brown. 
  5. Meanwhile, cook the spaghetti to the consistency you like, and drain. 
  6.  Heat the pasta sauce until hot.

Serve With

Serve the spaghetti and top with the pasta sauce and a few of the rice balls. Garnish with some grated vegetarian cheese on top if you like.
