How to Make Hummus

Learn how to make hummus from scratch! It's easier than you might think.

Hummus is a delicious and healthy dip recipe from the Middle East that today can be found all over the world.

Basically it is a simple recipe with chickpeas, or garbanzo beans, mashed with garlic, lemon juice, salt and Tahini.

Tahini is a paste made of ground sesame seeds. It works as a thickening agent in different dishes and sauces. It's healthy, nutritious and tastes great.

How to make hummus

If you can’t find Tahini where you live, or for a low fat hummus recipe, I find hummus tastes good also without it, or you could mix in 2 tbs greek yogurt if you like.

But the best way how to make hummus is no doubt with real Tahini.

For the tastiest hummus recipe, you need as freshly dried chickpeas as possible.

Old dried chickpeas take ages to cook and are not as tasty. The ones I used for this recipe I bought at the local farmers market, and at first I thought a bit overpriced, but wow- what quality!

The garbanzo beans, after being soaked, were cooked in only 35 min. and were absolutely heaven! Not to forget how the hummus turned out; Light, fluffy and so delicious!

How To Make Hummus

Here’s What You Need

Hummus ingredients
  • 1 cup dried chickpeas, makes at least 2 cups soaked (see picture)
  • ½ tsp baking soda for soaking and another ½ tsp baking soda for boiling the chickpeas
  • Juice of 1 and a ½  lemons
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • About ¼ cup Tahini
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • Ground paprika for decoration

Here’s What You Do

Hummus recipe
  1. Soak the beans overnight in a colander with 4 cups of water and ½ tsp baking soda.
  2. Drain the beans and put in a large pot with about double the water to the beans, add another ½ tsp baking soda.
  3. Bring to a boil, and skim and discard the thick white foam that forms on the surface. Lower the heat and simmer for 35min to 1 hour, depending on the freshness of the beans. You can test when the beans are ready if a chickpea mashes easily and when there is no white in the middle. Drain.
  4. Put the chickpeas, garlic cloves and salt in a food processor or blender. Process for about 1 minute.
  5. Add the lemon juice and Tahini, process for another 1-2 minutes.
  6. That’s it! Plate and serve.....yummy!

Optional: It is customary to decorate the Hummus dip with for example a drizzle of olive oil, some sweet red paprika, some parsley leaves.

Be creative- you may play with your food!
