Prepare the sauce in advance to have ready when you need it! This one lasts for at least two weeks in the fridge.

It is a good idea to always have some barbecue sauce at hand, not only for a vegetarian BBQ, but to spice up other meals as well.

More Uses of a BBQ Sauce:

  • And why not spice up a grilled eggplant, fried onions and mozzarella cheese sandwich with a dab of BBQ sauce?
  • Or maybe spread the sauce over grilled portobella mushrooms and serve with baked potatoes...yummy!
  • And did you know that cayenne pepper is a powerful healing spice?  It improves blood circulation and is great for your heart among many other things.

This, not-so-secret BBQ sauce recipe is sweet, but has a balanced heat from the chili and cayenne pepper.

To be more family friendly, this barbecue sauce recipe is medium hot, but if you like you can spice it up by adding more chili and cayenne pepper- if you dare!

Homemade BBQ Sauce Recipe

Here's What You Need

  • 1 small white onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp dark brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp vegan Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper

Here's What You Do

  1. In a small saucepan heat the olive oil on medium heat.
  2. Now add the onion and garlic and fry gently until fragrant and translucent. Do not let the onions brown since it can make the sauce bitter.
  3. Then add all the other ingredients, stir and let simmer on low heat under lid for 30 min. Stir every 10 minutes.
  4. When done, pour in a screw top jar if not used immediately, let it cool and store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. You can freeze it too.
